Why is Meghan McCain a Republican?
I occasionally stumble across Meghan McCain‘s commentaries, mostly found on The Daily Beast, and am always confused by what I read. The daughter of John MCain is likeable, smart, and reasonable. She hates Ann Coulter. She’s also trying to revamp the Republican party’s image with younger people and give the old guard tips on how to reach out. She doesn’t support many of the party’s stances on cultural issues and admits she voted for John Kerry in 2004.
But what’s left of the party beyond those culture war stances? Their economic platform is obviously a failure, and McCain doesn’t really seem to care about any other aspects of their agenda. She says she’s pro-military, but so is the Democratic party. What makes McCain a Republican, beyond loyalty to her father? Perhaps a prominent place in the group and a professional leg up the ladder? She’s certainly off to a great start as a pundit, based on both her astute observations and strong writing voice as well as her lineage. But I really have to wonder what McCain sees as the point of saving the Republican party and whether she has any real attachment to it beyond her familial and social connections. In terms of her ideology, I have my doubts.
