Public Works for the 21st Century
As much as I love the idea of launching a new wave of public works projects to improve our national infrastructure and create new jobs, I have a few reservations about this article.
Nowhere is there any mention of public transportation projects, which, let’s face it, are far more crucial in the long run than roads and bridges alone. Trains and subways need to be included in the public works agenda.
Also, what about education? There is a federal system of public schools and colleges that are crying out for investment, and what fits better under the umbrella of public works? Let’s give millions to hire more teachers and improve our schools, not just make it an easier and more comfortable commute to work.
Addendum: So of course it’s just the US press that ignores part of the plan just cause: this article from the BBC mentions major efforts to improve the schools to make them energy-efficient and extend internet access. Hooray!
