Creative Cities

I recently stumbled across the idea of the “Creative City.” It turns out there are urban regions throughout the world that have publicly funded initiatives to encourage artists and creators through grants, conferences, exhibitions, etc., with the idea that it makes for more vibrant public spaces and economies. The idea originated in North America and Europe, but has been taken up in Asia recently.

Singapore has one, Yokohama in Japan has one, the city of Toronto in Canada is contemplating one. Hong Kong has had talks. Toronto’s report also identifies Montreal, Austin, Texas and Providence, Rhode Island as up-and-coming creative hubs as well, challenging the ranks of London, New York and Berlin.

All justified with the following Venn diagram, so we can all breathe a sigh of relief, creativity works! Click on the image for the larger version.
