Media and Politics
I’ve been getting more and more frustrated with how the media is covering the presidential campaign. Is it really enough to report on each campaign’s conference calls and parrot back talking points? Is this really considered reporting? Do voters really want to make up their minds based on who last got the most positive spin on their most recent attack on the other candidate?
Here is the kind of analysis I’ve been looking for, in fact, I had done a little of the same myself, and come to similar conclusions. What are the real differences on policy, on management, on effectiveness, between Clinton and Obama? They can make declarations all they want, but when their proposed policy platforms are so similar, we need another metric. And there is a real record that people can consult, which is their Senate history. Sure, Obama’s isn’t very long, but all the more reason to compare and contrast the last year, which is exactly what someone did on the Daily Kos. I never thought I’d be referencing a Daily Kos article here, but seriously, THIS is journalism. Let’s see some of it turn up in the national outlets please!!
And if you’re not into following the link, here’s the conclusion, based on analysis of proposed and passed bills:
“Finally, Obama appears to have a better record last year in the Senate on getting his bills and amendments passed than does Clinton. I’ve listed everything that passed the Senate for each them at the end in boxes. But check out Thomas.loc.gov for yourself. I may have missed something.
In my eyes Obama is the superior choice in every way. He cares about more of the issues that matter to me. Kids and health care are important but so is the issue of global warming, on which Clinton introduced not a single bill last year.
Obama is a leader. With bigger majorities in Congress, much of his agenda should sail through. He can inspire this country to change course on so many things, from health care to global warming, where attitudes have to be changed first.”
