So in the middle of the this depressing political climate, I wanted to point out some wonderful news for Californians.

Karen Bass has been elected Speaker of the California Assembly! When I was working at i.e. communications, Karen Bass was awarded the 2003 Peace Prize from The California Wellness Foundation, before she ran for the House.

Darrell Steinberg is about to be elected President of the California Senate! In 2005, Darrell Steinberg helped us pass reforms to foster care legislation that helped foster youth aging out of the system get access to services like transitional housing and job training.

Both of these legislators have been essential supporters of children and families in California for years. Education, community development, strengthening families, violence prevention, foster care–these are the priorities we should start seeing emerge alongside the usual business agenda. Nice.
